by Carole Copeland Thomas As we celebrate this Mother's Day, l am reminded of the wonderful connection between our mothers and those who have mentored us.
History of Mother's Day--The Action of One Woman: The driving force behind Mother’s Day was Anna Jarvis, who organized observances in Grafton, W.Va., and Philadelphia, Pa., on May 10, 1908. As the annual celebration became popular around the country, Jarvis asked members of Congress to set aside a day to honor mothers. She succeeded in 1914, when Congress designated the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. My Mentors In this video I am paying tribute to the women (and men) who raised me at my home church, St. Paul AME in Detroit Michigan. This video shows how important mentoring is between generations. Enjoy! Happy Mother's Day To All!!

Someone pulls your tripwire and a wave of anger comes rushing to the surface of your mouth. You lash out in hostility with unfiltered vengeance fit for a boxing ring. You keep going until you’re exhausted, yet satisfied. You have successfully attacked your opponent, who lies shocked in silence by what you have just said. You couldn’t help it. The words came rushing out so easily. And you were so angry at your opponent, colleague, loved one, staff member or friend that censoring your message was the last thing on your mind.
Then a flash of reality streaks across your brain. What have I done??? Why did I say that?? OMG I don’t want to think about the backlash! These moments can reek havoc in our homes, on the job, in our relationships or as we are negotiating important contracts or agreements. Unfiltered angry words are actually part of the Seven Deadly Sins, actions and behaviors that we should all resist during our journey in life. Easier said than done you say. Well, with some practice and advance planning you can prepare for combatting these difficult situations with diplomacy and tact. Skill and confidence. Serenity and courage. The combination creating a systematic manner of managing your anger so that it does not turn into verbal rage. Here’s a simple three step process that will help you channel your energy in the right direction the next time your blood boils and you just want to lash out with an unfiltered response. Stop. Think. Then Speak
Words matter! Tone of voice matters! Body language matters! Used correctly, they can signal a powerful message that you understand the anger, but you won’t participate in a shouting match. Think about this from a proactive perspective. You are going to get get angry sometime in the near future. Preparing for your reaction is how you can control the situation as best as you can. Three simple actions can work in your favor and diffuse a difficult situation. Stop. Think, Then Speak. It’s a strategy I have often used, and I encourage you to try it in the future. It will also help you sleep at night when the going gets tough. -Carole Copeland Thomas

Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== Sometimes in our fast paced world it’s difficult to imagine our communities of the past. Historian Rui Santos detailed an average trip by horse and carriage from Boston to Plymouth in the 1830s lasting some 10 hours. Fifty years later a new form of transportation would take center stage: the bicycle. And it was during that time period between 1880 and 1900 that the intersection of race, athleticism and cycling came to mean new forms of freedom and expression. Lorenz Finison’s remarkable new book, Boston’s Cycling Craze paints the landscape of how a host of visionaries took to the streets and byways … all for the glory of the bicycle. Black, White, Asian and Biracial…they are all in the book and all chronicled in detail during these pioneer years of cycling. Come explore with us as we turn back the clocks to the golden age of bicycles during and era worth noting in the annuls of American history. About The Book From 1877 to 1896, the popularity of bicycles increased exponentially, and Boston was in on it from the start. The Boston Bicycle Club was the first in the nation, and the city’s cyclists formed the nucleus of a new national organization, the League of American Wheelmen. The sport was becoming a craze, and Massachusetts had the largest per capita membership in the league in the 1890s and the largest percentage of women members. Several prominent cycling magazines were published in Boston, making cycling a topic of press coverage and a growing cultural influence as well as a form of recreation. Lorenz J. Finison explores the remarkable rise of Boston cycling through the lives of several participants, including Kittie Knox, a biracial twenty-year-old seamstress who challenged the color line; Mary Sargent Hopkins, a self-proclaimed expert on women’s cycling and publisher of The Wheelwoman; and Abbot Bassett, a longtime secretary of the League of American Wheelman and a vocal cycling advocate for forty years. Finison shows how these riders and others interacted on the road and in their cycling clubhouses, often constrained by issues of race, class, religion, and gender. He reveals the challenges facing these riders, whether cycling for recreation or racing, in a time of segregation, increased immigration, and debates about the rights of women. Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== It’s Holy Week, the most important season in the Christian calendar. During this week millions of Christians worldwide will commemorate the cruxifiction and resurrection of Jesus Christ between Good Friday and Easter Sunday morning. Yet the story of the week is not so much the triumph of Jesus dying and rising from the dead for our sins….but rather an obscure “Religious Freedom” bill that just passed in Indiana, targeted squarely at discriminating against those in the LGBTQ community. The country, quite frankly is up in arms against this new law and it’s putting much heat on the governor of Indiana and the legislature that passed the law. Companies are moving their employees out of the state, and major conventions are weighing their options about holding future meetings in Indiana. Even the giant retailer, Walmart, flexed its muscles and put a squeeze on the governor of Arkansas not to sign a similar bill. Times are changing. The question is why do some feel the need to shut out minority groups…this time in the name of religion?? ======================== Background Information The Religious Freedom Restoration Act The law is known as Senate Bill 101. Pence signed it into law last week (Week of March 23, 2015). It takes effect July 1. The text says that the state cannot "substantially burden a person's exercise of religion" unless it is furthering a "compelling government interest" and acting in the least restrictive way possible. Nineteen states have so-called religious freedom laws. They are modeled after a federal law, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, signed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. It passed the House without objection and cleared the Senate by a vote of 97-3. Clinton said at the time that the law subjects the federal government to "a very high level of proof before it interferes with someone's free exercise of religion.” Some legal experts have said that Indiana's law differs from the federal law, and most other similar state laws, in ways that could allow businesses a wider berth to discriminate. Context Gay marriage has been legal in Indiana since last October, when the Supreme Court declined to take up a challenge to a federal appeals court ruling. Indiana does not have a state law specifically protecting gay people from discrimination. As The Washington Post pointed out over the weekend, the other 19 states that passed so-called religious freedom laws did so before gay marriage became legal in most of the country. Last February, then-Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona vetoed a similar law. "I sincerely believe that Senate Bill 1062 has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve," she said at the time. The backlash against the proposed law in Arizona was severe, and mirrors what is happening in Indiana. The NFL was even said to be considering moving the Super Bowl out of the state. Defense Social conservatives say that the law would stop the government from compelling people to do things they object to on religious grounds, like catering or providing flowers for a gay wedding. Daniel O. Conkle, an Indiana University law professor who supports both the law and gay marriage, offered a defense in an essay for The Indianapolis Star: Applying this test, a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that a Muslim prisoner was free to practice his faith by wearing a half-inch beard that posed no risk to prison security. Likewise, in a 2012 decision, a court ruled that the Pennsylvania RFRA protected the outreach ministry of a group of Philadelphia churches, ruling that the city could not bar them from feeding homeless individuals in the city parks. Indiana Right to Life and the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List have also come out in support of the law. Source: http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/indiana-religious-freedom-law-what-you-need-know-n332491 Indiana General Assembly Senate Bill 101 Digest: Religious freedom restoration. Prohibits a governmental entity from substantially burdening a person's exercise of religion, even if the burden results from a rule of general applicability, unless the governmental entity can demonstrate that the burden: (1) is in furtherance of a compelling governmental interest; and (2) is the least restrictive means of furthering the compelling governmental interest. Provides a procedure for remedying a violation. Specifies that the religious freedom law applies to the implementation or application of a law regardless of whether the state or any other governmental entity or official is a party to a proceeding implementing or applying the law. Prohibits an applicant, employee, or former employee from pursuing certain causes of action against a private employer. ======================== YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME! See You On March 17th!! -Carole Copeland Thomas India is the second most populous country in the world, topping 1.2 billion people and counting. The Christian community peaks at 2%. The majority of Indians are Hindu, and there is a very active right wing Hindu segment of The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Narendra Modi is the head of the BJP and was elected as Prime Minister by a large majority back in May 2014. Ironically the voting took place in May 2014 during the AME India Annual Conference when I visited the country for the first time.
Last week Prime Minister Modi in collaboration with the Catholic Church in India announced a no tolerance policy for hate crimes committed against the Christian community. There are also a minority population of Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists and other minority religions in India. Christians often practice their religion at great risk in certain parts of the country. While on the trip we visited the church of Rev. John Wesley a brave AME pastor whose original church building was bulldozed by the right wing Hindus. So we met with the women and children in an open air concrete structure that has yet to be finished because of cost. Our women took up a collection of $610 in 15 minutes and gave it to Rev Wesley to help finish his church. He pastors Emmanuel AME Church in Puthur, Andhra Pradesh India and was very grateful for our support. Above is a photo of our group on Day One at our fabulous hotel, The Leela Palace. We had just sorted our mission items and got them ready for Presiding Elders Sarah and Abraham Peddiny. Some of the items were given out last week during our visit. The others will be carefully distributed according to the needs of the AME India Community. PLEASE come with us next February 2016 when we return to India for our next trip. Details in March. Dear Valued Reader:
This is just a taste of what we are experiencing here in India. Such an extraordinary people and truly an incredible country. I will provide much more commentary in the days ahead. Today we visit the women and children of Thirumani Village and the Educational Center that the Christiana R. Gray Women’s Missionary Society is supporting. The items you see in the photo are hygiene and educational supplies donated by the delegation that will be distributed today. I am honored to lead this delegation, and am learning so much during my second trip to India. Stay tuned for more highlights in the days ahead. -Carole Copeland Thomas, MBA CDMP |
